Target audience: Nursing/Allied Health Faculty, RNs, LPNs, anyone in healthcare who is responsible fordocumentation.Program description: Legal “hotspots,” How to write legally defensible notes, common documentation pitfalls,key sources of lawsuits for nurses, strategies for documenting difficult situations/conversations and high-risksituations e.g., discharge instructions, AMAs, electronic documentation, charting by exception, flowsheets, patienteducation, patient refusal of treatments, medications. Review/discussion of actual lawsuits.

(half-day)Target audience: All licensed NursesProgram description: This program is designed to provide a refresher on the legalities of nursing practice.Content includes an overview of the nurse practice act, scope of practice for various nursing roles, nursingconduct/misconduct, and information regarding licensure.
Title: Ethical dilemmas in Nursing (half or full day)Target audience: RNs/LPNs.Program description: Differentiation/relationship between law and ethics. Code of Ethics in accordance toANA, available resources when facing ethical dilemmas, Principles/foundation of ethics. Case Study approach:participants given reality-based dilemmas and are asked to analyze utilizing ANA code of ethics/underlyingethical principles. *Full day include strategies for dealing with dilemmas with strong emphasis on conflictmanagement/communication.

Title: Medical-Surgical Nursing Review Course: to assist with preparation for Med-Surg Certificationor Practice Update (Two-day Program).Target audience: RNs *LPNs may attend with the understanding that they are not eligible to sit for the exam.Program description: Review of common diseases of each body system to include anatomy and physiology,lab interpretation, normal/abnormal assessment findings, nursing/medical interventions; alterations inhomeostasis; trends/issues in nursing. Title: The Acutely Ill Medical-Surgical Patient: Improving Patient Outcomes through Evidence-Based Practice (8 hours.).Target audience: Licensed NursesProgram description: Complex medical-surgical patients with emphasis on early symptom recognition and management. Specific disease processes/topics discussed include Shock, SIRS/Sepsis, Stroke, Aneurysm/cerebral bleed, Respiratory failure, COPD, Acute vs. Chronic renal failure, hemodynamic instability and Lab interpretation. *Specific course topics can be adjusted on request.
Title: Surgical Emergencies: Improving Patient Outcomes through Evidence-Based Practice (8 hours)Target audience: Licensed NursesProgram description: Most common surgical complications with emphasis on prevention, recognition, and management. Specific complications include disturbances in volume, respiratory, lab values, blood glucose management, GI/GU, pain, sepsis/shock, delirium, poor patient outcome associated with tubing misconnections, ethical/legal concerns.
